Mr Sarker’s Bio

Shahrier Sarker is a Consultant Orthopaedic Hand and Wrist Surgeon practising across London and Essex, specialising in complex hand surgery, wrist arthroscopy, trauma reconstruction and minimally invasive upper limb procedures.

After graduating from the National University of Singapore, Mr Sarker moved to the UK in 2009 to undertake higher surgical training in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery through Health Education East of England. During his training, he worked at leading orthopaedic centres including Addenbrooke’s Hospital as well as Cambridge and Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital. Whilst there, he developed expertise in upper limb surgery and complex trauma care.

He later completed a prestigious subspecialty fellowship at Guy’s & St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, training in advanced elective and traumatic hand and wrist surgery under both orthopaedic and plastic hand surgeons. His clinical practice focuses on the management of (but not limited to) Ligament injuries, fractures, tendon disorders, arthritis, nerve compression syndromes and sports-related injuries affecting the hand and wrist.

Mr Sarker holds a Master’s degree in Orthopaedic Engineering and the British Diploma in Hand Surgery, reflecting his academic interest in implant design, surgical innovation and evidence-based orthopaedic practice.

He was awarded a travelling fellowship by the Federation of European Societies for Surgery of the Hand (FESSH) at the renowned Kaplan Institute in Barcelona. Whilst there, he refined advanced reconstructive and arthroscopic hand surgery techniques alongside internationally respected surgeons.

Mr Sarker is highly trained in wrist arthroscopy and keyhole hand surgery. As a member of the European Wrist Arthroscopy Society, he completed advanced master-level training at the IRCAD Institute in Strasbourg, internationally recognised for minimally invasive surgical education.

He has a particular specialist interest in thumb base joint replacement surgery and arthroscopic wrist ligament repair, including arthroscopic TFCC (triangular fibrocartilage complex) repair. He performs a high volume of these procedures and receives regional referrals for complex wrist ligament injuries from hospitals across East Anglia. He also teaches advanced wrist arthroscopy and ligament reconstruction techniques on specialist surgical courses.

Alongside clinical practice, Mr Sarker maintains an active academic and leadership role. He has authored book chapters, published research in peer-reviewed journals and presented nationally and internationally on hand and wrist surgery. He is the Educational Lead for the Orthopaedic Department at Broomfield Hospital and teaches on Royal College of Surgeons of England courses, including Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) and Excellence in Surgical Supervision programmes.

His leadership within hand surgery also extends internationally through the British Society for Surgery of the Hand (BSSH), where he serves on the Overseas Committee and leads the Bangladesh Overseas Project supporting specialist surgical training and service development.

Mr Sarker also completed the British Orthopaedic Association Future Leaders Programme, during which he established a complex wrist unit within Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust with BSSH funding support.

Outside medicine, he enjoys cycling, football, cooking and the performing arts with his wife and children.
